On November 6, more than two dozen CEOs of major U.S. corporations took part in a video conference to discuss what to do if Mr. Trump refuses to leave office or takes other steps to stay in power beyond the scheduled January 20 inauguration [of] President-elect Joe Biden. On Saturday Mr. Biden was declared the election winner by The Associated Press and other news organizations.
The Associated Press declared Biden to be the “President Elect” although the Constitution has no official role for a “non-profit news agency headquartered in New York City” set up as a “cooperative, unincorporated association” of two dozen or so media broadcasting corporations to declare who won Presidential elections. The President Elect is declared by the Electoral College.
But far more people watch TV and otherwise “consume media” on their smartphones than have ever read the Constitution. So really what is more important? What the Constitution says, or what the Associated Press says?
If Mr. Trump tries to undo the legal process or disrupts a peaceful transition to Biden, the CEOs discussed making public statements and pressuring GOP legislators in their states who may try to redirect Electoral College votes from Biden to Trump, said Yale Management Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, who convened the meeting. “They’re all fine with him taking an appeal to the court, to a judicial process. They didn’t want to deny him that. But that doesn’t stop the transition,” said Sonnenfeld. “They said if that makes people feel better, it doesn’t hurt anything to let that grind through.”
The Fortune 500 CEOs didn’t want to deny the President of the United States a fair judicial process. They could have denied him that, but in their magnanimity they chose not to.
Notice this part:
the CEOs discussed making public statements and pressuring GOP legislators in their states who may try to redirect Electoral College votes from Biden to Trump
The Constitution says that the state legislators select the Electors to the Electoral College. But the Fortune 500 CEOs – the capitalists who control corporate America – will “pressure” the state legislators by making “public statements” – meaning, by using the power of the mass media they control.
No one elected these CEOs to any branch of government. Yet here they are, using their mass media to “pressure” the elected representatives to do what they want and overrule the will of the people who elected those legislators.
It’s all rather stunning isn’t it?
On Saturday, the day after the video meeting, the Business Roundtable, a group that represents the most powerful companies in America, including Walmart, Apple, Starbucks and General Electric, put out a statement congratulating Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris. It largely reflected the conversation from Friday’s video meeting
Remember – if you were to say that powerful people meet in secret – people more powerful than the elected officials that meet in public – you are a “conspiracy theorist.” Think of all the prominent right-wing – especially “dissident right” – people who go into hysterics calling people “conspiracy theorists.”
Think of all the people on the “dissident right” who have spent years attacking 9/11 “truthers” for being “conspiracy theorists.”
But here’s an example of a group of CEOs, holding private video conferences, then making public statements demanding that the government recognize Joe Biden as the President – because their media corporations said so – despite there being not a single elector even named yet.
Hey – it’s CBS spreading this “conspiracy theory” – blame them, not me.
Before the election I speculated what would happen if the Electoral College declared for one candidate, but the media corporations simply declared someone else the winner, and spread conspiracy theories about Russians “hacking into the Electoral College” or perhaps “interfering with the EC vote via Russian disinformation Facebook memes.”
This was way back in September. I’m hardly some sort of prophet or great analyst. I just read what the “Transition Integrity Project” was saying, and what all the people who really run America – Capitalists – were saying, and they all said, with one voice, Biden will win and Trump will lose.
The day after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, FDR’s administration sent armed troops into the California headquarters of the Walt Disney corporation. Disney was a major media company and was often seen as supporting the anti-war Right and opposing FDR and a partnership with the Communist regime in the USSR. As Ron Unz has documented, the FDR administration, during its planning for World War II and in the aftermath of the USA entering the war, went on a nation wide censorship spree against independent newspapers and authors. Perhaps half of the most prominent writers, journalists, and authors, who had opposed FDR and the war, have been all but written out of history. In 1940, these people were prominent citizens with large audiences. After 1940, they have been disappeared – just as effectively as the USSR airbrushed “purged” intellectuals from news photographs after the fact.
The Trump bitter clingers believe that the election was stolen and that eventually Trump will prevail. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Unless Trump does what FDR did, and arrests at least one prominent media figure, perhaps the CEO of CBS, I won’t hold my breath.
As for the Constitution – it was a good idea and it would be great if people were to follow it. But obviously that is not happening, so appeals to the rule of law and Constitutional principles are just so much LARPing. You may care, deeply, but no one else does.
Until “we” have a communications platform that we control, “we” are simply at the mercy of those that do. Ideas are important but if your ideas influence ten people, while their ideas influence ten million people, well, it’s obvious who is going to win, and it isn’t you.
As for the gun types? The media tells the people with guns who to shoot. So all the Second Amendment does is make sure that the Mass Media has millions of armed people waiting to shoot who the media tells them to.
George Bush had to get on TV the week after 9/11 and beg people to not go around shooting random people that “looked Muslim.” Conservative right-wingers are submissive – they want to submit to power, they want someone to tell them what to do – and will jump at any chance to attack those weaker than them if given the opportunity by an authority figure.
Incidentally, that’s why the media covers up black on white crime.
